Tips for Better Life of Rolls:
- Ensure sufficient quantity of high-grade coolant to prevent the rolls from getting over heated.
- Arrange proper filtration for the coolant.
- Never put the roll immediately on grinder after removing from the mill. It requires to be cooled properly before grinding.
- After removal from the mill, the roll is in a hot condition. In that condition, do not keep the roll on its barrel but instead on its journals. Also ensure free air-flow around the barrel for fast and effective cooling.
- Thermal shocks can be easily avoided by warming up the rolls before putting them into the mill.
- In case of skidding, please grind the barrel sufficiently to remove any possible surface cracks. Rolls should be checked for cracks by acid etching before re-use.
- Stress relieving of rolls is recommended after every re-grinding for four hours in an oil bath at 180 0 C for hardness upto 62 HRC and for 6 hours at 160 0 C for those above 62 HRC.
- Remove at least 0.25mm material while re-grinding the rolls.
This normally removes the work hardened layer and minor surface
cracks.
